After days of first IV fluid only, followed by feeding tubes only, Walter was given the first bottle. He sucked a few times, but mostly he just let it drop to the back of his throat and swallowed. However, he did keep breathing the whole time and managed about 1/2 his food. Go, Walter!

Milestones of Cuteness
I'm learning that in the NICU, boundaries are pushed on an almost hourly basis. The staff tries to move the babies along in development as quickly as possible. Whether it be reducing their IV intake, taking them off oxygen, or upping their feedings, they push to get the babies onto the next step.

Gordon had a rough day. He is a hard stick for IVs and he also goes through them quickly. Also within a few minutes of his IV he had to eat, get his suppository, have his diaper changed and have his t-shirt taken off. He was one unhappy camper. They put him on my chest for a little skin-to-skin time and he just collapsed arms spread. I got my first hug!!
Adele has already started praying.
And Walter has already picked up some of his dad's habits. In this case, it is Jeff's favorite sleeping position.
Finally, the staff last night made us this wonderful piece for us to take home. I love that we'll be able to remember just how tiny our babies were!
I can't wait to see what they have in store for us tomorrow.

Oh Joey - that's hand print thing is wonderful!!! And such fabulous pics!!!
ReplyDeleteFirst bottle already! Right on, Walter! And poor Gordon; harrassed by the help. He does look cashed out. Baby steps are just smaller when you're a preemie, but they're coming along so fast. Signs of future brilliance, no doubt.
ReplyDeleteWoo-hoo! Great to see them making such great progress. Fascinating to see how their personalities are so distinct and present right from the start.
ReplyDeleteI'm in awe the staff did the beautiful handprint plaque for you, not only for the precious memories you have but the frustrating one you don't -- it took us over four hours to get Daniel's print. Like I said, personalities are right there from the start; it's still really tough to get him to do anything if he's disinclined to acquiesce. :-)
So glad you're resting in your own bed again. The triplets are building strength -- you'll certainly need yours!

PS: Did you get a measurement before the C-section so we know who won the baby shower game? ;-)
Hi Joey & Jeff,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the arrival of your precious little ones - Walter, Gordon & Adele. How cute they are. Love all the pictures and have enjoyed being able to follow along these past months. Love and prayers for all.
Love Uncle Darrell & Aunt Linda

Joey, thank you for sharing the precious pics of the babies. You captions are wonderful, by the time I got to the wonderful keepsake the staff made of the handprints I was all choked up and crying...but with a smile. Sending my love and prayers.

These photos are wonderful, Joey. They bring tears to my eyes. Thanks for posting them and sharing with us. All three babies are beautiful. Sorry Gordon had such a rough time...all those needle sticks. Poor little guy.
