I had a few things to pick up at Target today, so I decided to also buy some sleepers, onesies, and diapers for the babies. As I picked out what I wanted, I realized this was my first purchase for the babies. I've received a lot of gifts from very generous friends and relatives, but this was the first time I was personally buying something for my little ones. I'm sure soon in the future I'll be *gulping* at how much my children cost, but this was a special moment.
The other night, Jeff mentioned he's worried about me buying stuff. The thing is I don't like to spend money on myself, but I love spending it on other people. He says he could see me easily getting out of control buying stuff for the kids.
I'm heading to a resale shop on Monday with my friend Karina to look for a few more outfiits for the babies. This could be dangerous...
Garage sales are your friend!!! (Or at least your mom's friend since I'm guessing they may be a bit too much for you right now) ;-)
ReplyDeleteEspecially for the tiny clothes. Babies are not in them very long and they don't actually "do" much in them but lay around.
Not sure when would be a good time, but I know my mom hit a bunch of garage sales when my kids were small and found some AMAZING stuff for pennies. Hint: go to the ones in the neighborhoods with really nice houses. LOL.
I will say here that since I had no money and I hate to shop anyway, I never once went to a garage sale - my mom was the master buyer in my case.
I'll have to keep my eye out for our next neighborhood garage sale. I'm hoping the resale place will have a larger selection of NB sizes. The babies will be coming home at 5 pounds (at the largest) and NB sizes go up to 8 pounds, so they will be in that size for the first month or two. They don't do much in them -- except spit up and poop!! LOL! I've heard you end up changing their clothes at least once or twice a day and I want to make sure I have a enough on hand to handle that. The problem is not letting myself go overboard. *grin*
ReplyDeleteLOL - once they arrive you'll be too busy to shop so don't worry too much about overdoing it.
ReplyDeleteTell Jeff I said "hush" and enjoy buying your babies stuff now! That said...after they get home, you won't feel much like shopping then so enjoy it now :-)
ReplyDeleteI bought a lot of the boys stuff at local consignment stores! Funny thing was I bought a lot of preemie outfits and they were too big to fit in them! LOL I'm hoping your guys are at least 5 lbs or more. Somebody's gotta beat my 14 lbs 1 oz record!
Irish
Irish -- I just missed this HUGE consignment sale here in town. I'm so bummed! I think I will stick mostly to the resale shops and outlet stores. And I'm waiting on the preemie clothes. I'm going to hope that they are born at 36 weeks, 5ish pounds, and come home with me! That's my goal! *grin*
ReplyDeleteJoey, I remember that feeling. You will get tons of baby clothes from people. You'll be amazed. I found some great cosignment shops when Morine was a baby, I swear at one someone had a baby just a month or so ahead of me because I constantly found stuff there and there. There were also some trift shops that had great finds (I'm talking clothes with tags still on them).
ReplyDeleteSue
Sue -- Truthfully I don't mind that people haven't been giving us clothes for the babies. I actually enjoy picking out outfits! I've been doing it for other people's babies for years. *grin*
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you will have fun shopping for those babies. Hope you find lots of good bargains.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry...Jeff will soon find himself buying things for them, too, but with dads, it's mostly toys!! :)
Mary -- I think Jeff can't wait to buy big boy stuff. Right now he can barely feign interest in the gifts and purchases. I hit up that resale shop today and I'm so excited! I found some cute little sleepers for a great price.
ReplyDeleteResale and consignment shops are great for baby things. There are more of them all the time, too. Glad you found something good on your venture.
ReplyDeleteNot surprised that Jeff isn't too interested in all the baby gear. I remember when my friends had a shower for me before Ann was born, Steve was excited about going to see "Dirty Harry" with the other husbands while the shower was going on. He doesn't remember anything about the shower or the gifts but he does remember that movie and going out with the guys. Typical...
Mary -- LOL! I can see that!! I'm hearing this is super common with most men, so I'm not focusing on it too much. Even my pregnancy/baby books talk about how men have a hard time grasping the reality of the babies until they arrive. I have to remember, I'm the one who is constantly aware of them and always feeling them move. He doesn't get that same experience. On my shower day, Jeff's planning to take the guys (including Dad) to a sports bar. *grin*
ReplyDeleteJoey, I so understand, I couldn't wait to buy clothes, I love baby clothes also, I dressed her up every monday and took a pic or two of her, LOL Sue
ReplyDeleteSue -- I keep hearing over & over that I won't have the energy to do cute outfits for the first year, but I think I'll have to find the energy just so I can take photos of them, if nothing else.
ReplyDeleteYou'll find the energy, Joey! I couldn't resist dressing Elena up in adorable outfits and taking her picture ever since she was a wee little one. She was so good about it! Now she can run away, or make a fake pouty face. *eyes rolling* So, indulge a little! Irresistible, miniscule baby clothes were one of my greatest joys when I was preparing the baby room. I loved washing, sorting, and putting all those clothes away. I got a TON of hand me-downs from my Goddaughter. A 2nd ton came from my mother-in-law, who worked at Mervyn's at the time. She always wanted a daughter and had only two sons... you see where I'm going with this? Elena had more clothes than she could possibly wear in the 1st six months of her life BEFORE we got more as baby gifts. I made sure to pass everything on to people who would get more use out of them. I'm sure you're not breaking the bank at Target. If you were shopping at Neiman's, well, that's another thing. LOL!
